Welcome to episode 5 of World Class Voices, season 1: The Australian Icons.

This week, I had the privilege of sitting down with Heston Russell, a fifth-generation Army veteran, former Special Operations Commando Officer, and one of Australia’s most inspiring modern-day leaders. Over his remarkable 16-year military career, Heston led teams on high-stakes missions, including four deployments to Afghanistan and one to Iraq, whilst at one point even serving as personal protection to the Australian Prime Minister.

In this episode, Heston shares what it was like growing up in a proud military family, surrounded by a legacy of service. He takes us inside the world of Special Forces, explaining what it means to be a Commando, how one earns that title, and the grueling challenges faced by elite soldiers. We dive into his experiences during his one-year exchange with the U.S. Special Operations, offering a fascinating comparison between Australian and American military cultures.

But Heston’s insights go far beyond his time in uniform. He opens up about leadership, reflecting on whether great leaders need to be loud, and sharing the most profound leadership lesson he learned in the field. Heston also candidly discusses the struggles of transitioning to civilian life, the loss of "flow," and how he’s found new purpose as an advocate for veterans’ welfare, mental health, and national accountability.

We explore Heston’s mindset during life-or-death moments, what goes through his mind when in a war zone, and how he reconciles thoughts of mortality with his deep sense of duty.

Heston’s story is a testament to resilience, community, and service. From growing up in Brisbane with a family deeply rooted in Australian values to becoming a national advocate for change, his journey reflects the best of what it means to be Australian.

This conversation is packed with inspiration, raw honesty, and a reminder of the incredible individuals who serve and protect our nation.

So, sit back and join me as we celebrate the life and lessons of a true Australian hero: Heston Russell.
